The complex husband
Willem van den Bergh
Ally. Soldier. Stadtholder. Suspect. Defector. Behind every label is a choice that directly affected Maria and their children.

Why did he change sides?
The traditional summary is clear: after years of fighting, Willem chose the Spanish side. A serious historical account also asks what circumstances, interests and expectations lay behind that choice.
He supported the Revolt, captured several towns in 1572 and became stadtholder of Guelders in 1581. At the same time he sought contact with the Spanish governor. After arrest and release he openly joined the Spanish side.

Maria’s perspective
His political decision became the condition of her life. Arrest, departure from House Bergh and the stay at Ulft were consequences carried by the whole family.
